4.1. How do you get rid of the List-* (RFC 2369) headers?
These headers are recommended and defined by RFC 2369 (<http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2369.html>-) and should not be removed. Supporting MUAs will read the RFC 2369 headers and add controls for users to easily subscribe, unsubscribe, ask for help from the list owner, check/see the description of the list, etc.
For example the MUA I use (J C Lawrence <claw@kanga.nu>), exmh (<http://www.beedub.com/exmh/>-) , will add a new menu containing List help, subscribe, unsubscribe, archive, and post commands when a message containing RFC 2369 headers is viewed.
Note: Some MUAs, most notably Eudora, will display the headers when the message is open, but take the appropriate action when the user clicks on the links. Some users may consider this to make their display cluttered and less readable, however in the case of Eudora this was an explicit design decision.
By default Eudora shows extra headers, including list headers in open messages, but not in the preview pane. Unless you WANT to see the headers, there is really no reason to open messages. If you really wants to read from open messages rather than with preview, there is a way to enable this behavior.
To suppress display of the headers under Eudora on Windows you need to add the header names to the TabooHeaders or "Boring Headers" option. Try a Google search for "TabooHeaders" for more information on how to do this, or see the Eudora FAQ item <http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/2241hq.html> and <http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/2186hq.html>.
For Eudora 6.0 on Mac OS X, you can make use of the "Esoteric Settings" plug-in which is shipped with Eudora, but is turned off by default. To do this, see the instructions at <http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1779hq.html>. Once restarted, go to the "Special" menu, and select "Settings...". Scroll down to the "Boring Headers" icon, and click on it. In the field provided, add the appropriate "List-" headers that you do not want to see any longer.
For older versions of Eudora on the Macintosh, you can also use SuperSleek. It is no longer developed/supported, but it still works and it can be downloaded from <http://dradul.tripod.com/binaries/super-sleek-10.hqx>.
While not recommended, Mailman 2.1 supports suppressing all the RFC 2369 headers list-wide. See the admin interface under the General Options category, specifically the include_rfc2369_headers option. MM2.1 also supports removing just the List-Post header for announce-only or one-way lists.
The site admin can remove the ability for a list admin to supress the RFC 2369 headers by putting
ALLOW_RFC2369_OVERRIDES = No
in mm_cfg.py.
