In future versions of Mailman, I would like to see a feature that ends threads. Sometimes off-topic posts and flame wars are difficult to end. Lyris has a feature that allows the admin or moderator to reject future messages in the same thread.
Maybe this works based on the subject line, or maybe some kind of I.D. number in the header.
