1.31. How do I import/copy/convert my list from Lyris, Listar, LISTSERV, Yahoo!Groups, GoogleGroups, or some other mailing list manager?

Q: How do I import/copy/convert my list from Lyris, Listar, LISTSERV, Yahoo!Groups, GoogleGroups, or some other mailing list manager?

A: We're not going to try to give you explicit directions on how to do this sort of thing, at least not as part of this FAQ. We are the developers of Mailman, and we don't use any of these other systems, so we don't have much in the way of advice or assistance that we can provide to you.

However, these questions do come up on the mailing list quite frequently, and there are others who have had some experience in these areas. You can find those threads in the archives, using the techniques shown in FAQ 1.18 at How do I search the archives of the mailman-users mailing list?.

But if you need a little more assistance in how to formulate a good search query, try adding words like "convert", "import", or "copy" to your search string. Google has a method of doing this that will search for any of the given words as alternatives for each other, and this makes the process a little easier.

For example, if you wanted to search the archives for all messages which discuss converting mailing lists from Lyris to Mailman, you could use the following query:

 (import|convert|copy) inurl:mail.python.org/pipermail/mailman-users/

The URL for this would look something like this:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&client=safari&rls=en&q=%28import%7Cconvert%7Ccopy%29+inurl%3Amail.python.org%2Fpipermail%2Fmailman-users%2F&btnG=Search

I've put this URL into the TinyURL compressor, and this can now be shortened to the following:

http://tinyurl.com/k7ku3

That's just one example, but hopefully it helps give you more information that you can use to successfully search the archives of the mailman-users mailing list, so that you can come up with your own answer to the question.
